Who We Are

The Butterfly Wings Foundation (previously Heritage Post Polio) is a new registered charitable organization whose main raison d’être is to improve the living conditions of children affected by various neuromuscular conditions and help them remain with their families. Because of its early ties with polio, Butterfly Wings also seeks to help individuals stricken by Polio during their childhood and now suffer from Post Polio Syndrome.

Butterfly Wings is fully volunteer-led and operated, with no overhead whatsoever. Several members of the board themselves suffer from various long term health conditions and understand firsthand the needs they try to meet. They feel it is time these children receive the help they need. We run a tight ship: 90% of the funds received go directly to help families. Among the many needs YOU CAN HELP with, here are some worth noting:

  • Youngsters requiring special home adaptation to circulate around the house (automatic door openers, special ceiling tracks and lifts to carry older heavier children in and out of the washroom, elevators, ramps, etc). these equipments and modifications are very expensive and are only partially subsidized by government funds or other organizations;

  • Lack of adapted playground equipment or toys to let children enjoy themselves – as they should – with other children;

  • The need for expensive medically trained childcare professionals at home when the child requires babysitting;

  • Unsubsidized treatments (such as specialized therapeutic massages for the sick, therapeutic riding for disabled children) to help improve wellbeing;

  • Poor social life for lack of resources and venues;

  • Financial gap for the family to purchase an appropriate vehicle to be adapted by the SAAQ for wheelchair access;

  • Not being able to enjoy a pool because of the need for a special lift to allow disabled people to get in and out of the water;

  • Crafting of special tailor-made orthopedic shoes which remain uncovered by Medic Care;

  • Scooters for people whose health has deteriorated and are waiting for the healthcare system to respond with the proper equipment;

  • Relief and support for the parents and families affected;

  • Etc.

As you can see, the needs are many. And people like you and I can have a huge impact in the lives of these children and their families. Some of us are more blessed than others but everyone has a responsibility to help those in need. We would love it if everyone could give a large amount. If that is your case, great! If not, that’s fine too. Every gift makes a difference and is appreciated!

On behalf of the children, the post polio survivors and their families, we thank you in advance for your generosity and support.
